IELTS announced on March 5, 2026 that from mid-2026 it would no longer offer IELTS as a traditional paper-based test. Is paper-based IELTS really ending?
Yes. The official IELTS announcement says all IELTS tests will be delivered on computer after the paper format is phased out, with exact timelines varying by market. That means candidates should not assume a paper test will still be available simply because an older preparation website or video mentions it.

What stays the same when IELTS moves to computer?

What actually changes for candidates?
The biggest change is how you interact with Reading, Listening and Writing. Instead of working through printed question papers and handwriting most answers, you read questions on screen and enter answers on a computer. That makes screen reading, scrolling, mouse control, question navigation and typing part of your test-day workflow.
Speaking remains a live interaction with a trained IELTS examiner under current official guidance. Depending on the test arrangement, that may be face-to-face or delivered through an approved video setup.
What is IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper?
IELTS is also introducing a hybrid option in selected markets called Writing on Paper. Listening and Reading are completed on computer. The Writing tasks appear on the computer screen, but you write your responses by hand on an IELTS Writing Answer Sheet.
Official IELTS guidance says the Writing task types, scoring and time allocation are the same whether you type your answers or use Writing on Paper. The option is available for Academic and General Training in selected countries, but it is not available for IELTS for UKVI.
Should you switch your preparation to computer now?
If your planned test will be computer delivered, yes. Paper worksheets can still help you learn vocabulary, grammar and question types, but they do not train the physical workflow you will use on test day. At least part of every study week should involve timed computer practice.
For Reading, practise scanning passages on screen, scrolling without losing your place and moving efficiently between passage and questions. For Listening, practise reading ahead while entering answers without pausing the recording. For Writing, build enough typing fluency that keyboard speed does not limit idea development or proofreading.
A practical 7-day computer transition plan
Day 1: Complete a short Reading set on screen and learn the navigation controls.
Day 2: Complete Listening without pausing or replaying the audio.
Day 3: Type one Writing Task 2 response under the 40-minute target you use in practice.
Day 4: Practise difficult Reading question types such as Matching Headings and True/False/Not Given.
Day 5: Complete a full Listening test and review only after the test ends.
Day 6: Complete both Writing tasks in one timed session.
Day 7: Take a realistic computer-based mock test and review where screen use, typing or navigation cost you time.
Do you need to relearn IELTS strategies?
No. Good IELTS strategy still centres on understanding the task, finding evidence, managing time and producing accurate English. What changes is the execution layer. A Reading strategy that works on paper may need a different scrolling habit on screen; a Writing plan that works by hand may need stronger typing and editing discipline.
