Practice what actually loses marks

IELTS Listening question-type practice

Full tests build stamina, but targeted drills are usually faster when one task type repeatedly causes mistakes. Move between the practice engine and focused guides instead of repeating full tests without reviewing why answers were lost.

A better Listening practice cycle

  1. 1. Preview: read the task and predict the type of information you need before the audio reaches it.
  2. 2. Listen forward: if one answer is missed, move on instead of mentally replaying the previous sentence.
  3. 3. Review: label each error—spelling, distractor, lost position, vocabulary, or misunderstanding.
  4. 4. Drill: repeat the weak question type before taking another full section.

Use raw scores as a trend

IELTS awards one mark for each correct Listening answer and converts the total out of 40 to the nine-band scale. The exact raw mark needed can vary slightly by test version, so focus on a stable trend across several practice attempts rather than one unusually strong score.

Check Listening band scores

Hear it once

Train continuous attention. Official IELTS sample guidance states that each Listening recording is heard once only.

Mix question types

Do not prepare only with one comfortable format. IELTS uses tasks including multiple choice, matching, maps, forms, notes, summaries and short answers.

Practise on screen

Computer-focused practice helps you combine listening with on-screen question navigation and answer entry instead of treating those as separate skills.

IELTS Listening practice FAQs

How many parts and questions are in IELTS Listening?

IELTS Listening has four parts and 40 questions. Each correct answer receives one mark before the raw score is converted to the IELTS band scale.

Is IELTS Listening the same for Academic and General Training?

Yes. IELTS states that the Listening test is the same for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

How many times do you hear the IELTS Listening recording?

You hear each recording once only, so practice should train you to preview questions, follow the recording continuously and recover quickly if you miss one answer.

What Listening question types should I practise?

Common IELTS Listening tasks include multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form or note completion, table and flow-chart completion, summary or sentence completion, and short-answer questions.

Can practice scores guarantee my official IELTS band?

No. Practice scores are useful for tracking accuracy and identifying weak question types, but they cannot guarantee a future official IELTS result.
